![]() moneytopia.ukWhy MoneytopiaMoneytopia is a play on words and derives from utopia which means an ideal and perfect place or state, where everyone lives in harmony and everything is for the best. Moneytopia, like utopia is derived from Greek "topos" meaning "place". So this is a "Money Place". What is MoneytopiaMoneytopia is a place where useful links to money related sites can be found plus the occasional financial information. The links include sites for loans. For example, there is a website that brings together lenders and borrowers without the need for a traditional bank or credit union. Zopa works by lenders offering money as loans with an interest rate set by the lender. Borrowers take up these offers. Usually, the longer the loan the higher the interest rate. By having very low overheads, the lenders get a higher rate of interest than depositing their money in a bank and the lenders get a cheaper loan than if they went to a more traditional lender. In early December 2008, a typical lender would get a return on their loan of around 9% at a time when they would be lucky to get 4.5% from a building society account. In the same month, a borrower with a very good credit rating would pay around 7.2% for their loan and a young person without a credit history could pay as little as 12.7% for their loan - which is a good deal cheaper than many credit cards with an APR in excess of 20%! It contrasts the moral decadence and disunity of contemporary Christian Europe with the tolerance and prosperity of More's imaginary ideal state of Utopia, which is run on secular, communist principles. More coined the state's name from the Greek words ou "not" and topos "place", literally meaning "non-existent place". |
